BUKIT KATIL, 27 Feb- The tragic fire that claimed the lives of five family members in Kampung Berangan Enam, Umbai, Jasin, was not due to a wiring issue, but rather the result of an accident, the details of which are not yet available.
Mohd Pisar Aziz, the Director of the Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) Melaka, explained that his department is still awaiting detailed reports from the health and police departments to complete the investigation.
"Our investigation involves three main agencies: the fire department, health pathology, and police forensics. We have initial findings, but further discussions are necessary to determine the exact cause," he said at a press conference following the Melaka JBPM Annual Parade 2025 at the Bukit Katil JBPM Headquarters today.
The incident occurred on February 13, when a fire broke out at around 1:40 AM, resulting in the tragic deaths of five children.
In other updates, the Melaka JBPM received a total of 818 emergency calls between January 1 and February 25, which included incidents related to fires, rescues, and special tasks.
Mohd Pisar noted that fire-related calls topped the list with 396 incidents, followed by 387 rescue operations and 35 special task calls.
"Most of the fires involved bushfires, wood piles, buildings, garbage, and vehicles. During this period, fires led to seven deaths, five injuries, and four successful rescues," he stated.
Regarding rescue operations, there were seven fatalities, 47 injuries, and 58 successful rescues.
In 2024, the Melaka JBPM recorded a total of 5,081 emergency calls, comprising 3,000 rescue calls, 1,850 fire-related calls, 130 special task calls, and four false alarms.
