KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 7- Proton today began construction of its new electric vehicle (EV) assembly plant in Tanjung Malim.
The RM82 million investment is expected to produce various new energy vehicle (NEV) models for local and export markets.
Proton in a statement announced that the first phase of the company's EV assembly plan is targeted for completion by the end of 2025, with an initial production capacity of 20,000 units per year.
"Once completed, it will produce various models based on the Global Modular Structure (GMA) platform starting with the Proton e.MAS 7, the Malaysian automotive brand's first EV model.
"The production target for PROTON's EV models in Tanjung Malim is in line with the company's commitment to supporting the government's EV industrial plan," the statement said.
Various smart manufacturing technologies are being used to ensure high-quality products are produced with maximum efficiency and minimal impact on the environment.
The factory construction ceremony was also attended by the Menteri Besar of Perak, Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad, as well as members of the state government and exco.
