CYBERJAYA, 11 February – The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is investigating six individuals who are believed to be involved in uploading false and offensive content related to His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia and the Conference of Rulers on the social media platform Facebook.
The investigation involved an inspection on one of the suspects in Setapak, Kuala Lumpur, who uploaded false content about the Conference of Rulers meeting.
"One smartphone unit and SIM card related to the case have been seized to assist the investigation. Forensic analysis will be carried out on the device to obtain further evidence," MCMC said in a statement.
Apart from that, another case was also investigated with the PDRM Classified Crime Investigation Unit (USJT) team, and the suspect is scheduled to give a statement tomorrow.
"Follow-up inspection operations will be conducted throughout this week on the suspects at separate locations in Sungai Petani, Kota Bharu, Kerian, and Teluk Intan," MCMC added.
Two notices have been issued to two individuals to appear to testify about the content they uploaded on Facebook.
The investigation is being carried out under Section 233(1)(a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 [Act 588], which metes out a maximum fine of RM50,000 or one year's imprisonment, or both.
MCMC reminds people not to upload fake content on online networks and applications, which can cause panic and uproar within the community.
