PUTRAJAYA, March 12– The government aims to ensure that the establishment of the Malaysian Gig Economy Commission (SEGiM) aligns with the harmonization of the Gig Workers Bill (RUU).

Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil explained that discussions in previous Cabinet meetings have emphasized the need for SEGiM to serve as the primary regulatory body, while also ensuring the sustainable development of the gig economy ecosystem.

"Our goal is to align the establishment of the Gig Economy Commission with the objectives of the Gig Workers Bill," he said.

Fahmi further noted that the Cabinet had tasked Human Resources Minister Steven Sim Chee Keong with conducting a more extensive engagement session to review and align both Bills.

He shared these updates with reporters at a post-Cabinet Meeting press conference.

Earlier, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi proposed that the Cabinet approve SEGiM as the main regulatory body to ensure the sustainable development of the gig economy. This recommendation focused on addressing key components of the gig economy model and identifying areas that require regulation.
