KUALA LUMPUR, March 24 - The government through the Energy Commission (EC) is finalising the proposed new electricity tariff schedule which is expected to come into effect on July 1, 2025.
The proposal takes into account the actual cost of electricity supply and ensures a more competitive and sustainable rate in the long term.
Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability, Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir said that the largest component in calculating the basic tariff is the projected price of fuel such as coal and gas, which has experienced significant increase globally over the past three years.
"The fuel projection for the RP4 (Regulatory Period 4) period is higher so that it reflects the actual fuel prices today. However, the government has decided to maintain the electricity tariff in the Peninsular for the period of January 1 to June 30, 2025 with a subsidy of RM5.96 billion," he said when answering a question from Senator Hussin Ismail in the Dewan Negara.
In addition, EC is working with the Ministry of Economy to examine the impact of changes in electricity tariffs on the prices of goods and services to ensure a balance between social welfare and the country's economic development.
In an effort to ease the burden on the people, the government is also continuing the Electricity Bill Rebate Program by providing monthly rebates of up to RM40 to Heads of Households (KIRs) in the hardcore poor category who are registered in the e-Kasih system.
