Malaysia wins World Mathematics and Science Olympiad 2024

BOGOR, Nov 6 - Malaysia, represented by 24 students, won all the championships contested for each category in the World Mathematics & Science Olympiad (WMSC) 2024 held in Bogor, Indonesia.

In addition to Malaysia, the competition was also attended by Indonesia, Bulgaria, the Philippines, and Vietnam.

The Malaysian contingent, led by the Chief Assistant Director, Kedah State Education Department who is also the Vice President of WMSC, Mohd Hafiz Mohd Salleh, consists of 8 students from Kedah; 3 students from Johor; 3 students from Kuala Lumpur; and 10 students from Selangor.

The Director of the Kedah State Education Department, Ismail Othman said, Malaysia was crowned as the Overall Champion for all the participating categories, namely Overall Champion Mathematics Middle Primary, Overall Champion Mathematics Upper Primary, Overall Champion Mathematics Junior Secondary, Overall Champion Science Upper Primary, and Overall Champion Science Junior Secondary.

Malaysian participants also brought home 12 gold, 8 silver, and 3 bronze medals.

In addition, the Malaysian team also won the Champion - Team Contest Mathematics Middle Primary (Team A); 1st Runner up - Team Contest Mathematics Middle Primary (Team B); Champion - Upper Primary Mathematics Contest Team (Team A); Champion - Team Contest Mathematics Junior Secondary (Team A); and Champion - Team Contest Science Junior Secondary (Team A).

WMSC is a newly named competition based on the combination of 2 previous competitions namely, the International Science Competition (ISC) and the Challenge for Future Mathematics (CFM).

This competition tests students' problem-solving skills in Mathematics Olympiad and Science Olympiad.
