KUALA LUMPUR, 3 December- The incidents of bullying at Universiti Pertahanan Nasional Malaysia (UPNM) must be stopped immediately.

His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, has decreed that all parties work towards ending this unhealthy practice and restoring the university's good name.

"To produce a military officer, it does require rigorous physical and mental training, but this is not to the point of being abusive as to cause injury and death," the King said in His Majesty's inaugural address as UPNM Chancellor at the university's 14th Convocation here, today.

"Parents send their children here to learn to become military officers, not to be subjected to bullying," His Majesty added.

His Majesty expressed disappointment that incidents of abuse continued to occur, despite previous cases having been brought to court.

The monarch emphasised, "UPNM's philosophy is to establish itself as a leading institution in the region in the fields of defence, military and security."

“If it continues, I do not want my name associated with this university anymore.

"The commanders and leaders must also take responsibility and resign for failing in their duties," His Majesty said.
