KEMAMAN, December 4 - After a 14-hour search, the search and rescue operation (SAR) of a male student believed to have drowned in Sungai Neram at Felda Neram 1 here, ended after the teenager's body was found this morning.
Terengganu Special Tactical Operation and Rescue Team of Malaysia (STORM) Zone 2 commander Mohd Zailani Abdullah said the body of Mohd Yusuf Adnan, 16 years old, was found by the rescue team at about 8.10am.
"The rescue team in charge of the search found a blue-coloured object resembling the victim's clothes on the surface of the water and stuck on a tree branch.
"Upon close inspection, they found the victim's fully clothed body about 400 meters away from the last location where he was seen by his friends," said Mohd Zailani in a statement.
He added that the victim's body was handed over to the police before being taken to the Kemaman Hospital Forensic Unit for further action.
In the incident late yesterday afternoon, the victim, a Form Four student of Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Felda Neram, is believed to have drowned after swimming and fishing in the river with 10 friends at about 4.00 pm.
Before the victim was swept away by the currents, his friend, Nor Mohd Aiman Hakim Mohd Nizam, 16, said he was fishing at the time and immediately jumped into the water to save his friend. After failing to do so, he asked for help from some local residents who happened to be there.
