KLUANG, 15 January - Residents in Kampung Contoh here, who were affected by the floods, are being put to the test again when the crops in their residential area were destroyed by a group of elephants early this morning.

The 3 am incident involved about eight to nine elephants which strayed close to the houses of the affected residents.

Rustam Tahir, who returned home to check on his house after the flood, was surprised by the presence of the elephants and could only seek protection inside the house.

"I saw that there were four elephant cubs, and the male one was tall. There were about eight to nine tails. But what I was most worried about is that they were banging hard on the kitchen area. I was scared since I was the only one here. When I took a look again this morning, all the banana trees had been flattened," he said.

Another resident, Siti Rohayu Ahmad said she came from Kahang to visit her cousin after getting a report of an elephant attack through a WhatsApp group.

"I'm from Kahang, coming here to see my cousin. In the group, they said there was a house being attacked by elephants, eating coconuts and so on. When I came to take a look, it really happened," she said.

It is believed that the group of elephants caused damages to the residents' crops in an effort to get food.
