SUNGAI PETANI, Jan 23- Vehicle owners who display registration numbers that do not adhere to official specifications, particularly those resembling an individual’s name, may face summonses.
Kedah Road Transport Department (JPJ) Director, Stein Van Lutam, stated that this is a common offense committed by road users.
“It’s a creative approach by Malaysians, as long as they can spell a name using the license plate numbers we issue, there’s a tendency for this to happen. However, it still violates the rules. Anyone who modifies or uses 'fancy' number plates for vehicles will be issued a summons,” he said.
Stein Van Lutam explained that action could be taken under Rule 6 of the Motor Vehicles (Registration and Licensing) Rules 1959, with a compound fine of up to RM250,000. Alternatively, offenders may face a fine of up to RM2,000 or imprisonment for up to six months, or both.
He shared this information during a press conference after attending the Road Safety Campaign in conjunction with the Kedah State-level Chinese New Year Celebration 2025 at the Taman Intan Morning Market.
The event was officiated by Dzowahir Ab. Ghani, Chairman of the Kedah State Agriculture, Plantation and Transport Committee, and Chairman of the Kedah Road Safety Council.
As part of the campaign, 100 adult helmets and 30 children’s helmets were provided for visitors to exchange their old helmets.
In addition, Kedah JPJ had previously issued a summons to a woman whose car displayed the “WATI” plate, which did not meet the proper registration number specifications.
