KUALA LUMPUR, 26 December- The National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is calling on stakeholders to implement drastic and comprehensive measures in an effort to prevent fatal accidents.
NIOSH Vice-Chairman Manivanan Gowin, in a statement, announced the matter in order to prevent a repeat incident like the one which happened at Kilometer 204 of the northbound North-South Expressway (PLUS).
"This incident reveals a major weakness in the safety system which requires immediate action and stricter enforcement.
"The responsibility lies not only with heavy vehicle operators, but also with law enforcers and all parties who are involved in the transport industry," the statement said.
As a strict measure, NIOSH also recommends periodic maintenance as well as strict and intolerant enforcement; driver training and awareness that must be strengthened; use of advanced monitoring technology; as well as strategic cooperation and integrated collaboration.
At the same time, NIOSH guarantees to help relevant authorities and agencies in identifying the sources of safety problems and finding more effective and sustainable solutions.
"The team is ready to carry out technical analysis, investigation of the cause of the accident, as well as propose accurate and appropriate enhancement measures.
"NIOSH also offers courteous driving courses and training related to ISO Traffic Management aimed at increasing driver awareness and assisting organisations in complying with relevant international safety standards," the statement added.
NIOSH also shows its commitment to be a strategic partner to all parties in ensuring road safety is at its highest level.
