CYBERJAYA, Dec 26- Telegram and Tencent (WeChat) have started the licensing process in Malaysia.
The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) commended Telegram and Tencent's commitment to comply with the licensing requirements.
Both platforms are expected to meet the necessary conditions to operate in Malaysia in the near future.
"The licensing requirements that take effect from January 1st aim to improve online safety, protect consumers, and strengthen the regulation on internet messaging and social media service providers.
"The framework is designed to create a trusted and safe online environment by calling on service providers to protect users, especially children and vulnerable groups," the statement read.
MCMC reminds all service providers who meet the licensing requirements to submit their applications immediately before the deadline of December 31st.
Failure to do so may result in regulatory action being taken, even though it is something that all parties want to avoid.
