KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 25- The Committee of Vice Chancellors and Rectors of Public Universities (JKNCR UA) reported that the allegations of illegal student entry into public universities as unfounded and done without solid evidence.
Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) vice-chancellor who is also Chairman of JKNCR UA, Professor Datuk Dr Mohd Ekhwan Toriman denied the accusation and instead insisted that the process of student selection for public universities is through open channels or commercial channels set by the Ministry of Higher Education (KPT).
"According to data released by the Department of Higher Education (JPT), less than 10 percent of students enter through this open channel compared to the primary channel.
"This is about 11,860 compared to the total intake of students for each cohort which is almost 150,000 students," he said.
He said this to reporters in the capital.
In the meantime, he also informed that admission to critical programmes in public universities depends on university vacancies.
"The critical programme has a student limit; if it is full it will not be offered through the open channel.
"Typically, critical fields are rarely open through open channels because the primary channel has been filled mainly with qualified students including from the B40, T20 and even M20 groups," he added.
Mohd Ekhwan also said public universities provide access to quality higher education for qualified students, regardless of background.
