KUCHING, Nov 25- Sarawak requires more hydraulic engineering expertise, particularly in water systems, according to Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
This need arises as Sarawak embarks on the construction of a deep-sea port with island reclamation aimed at enhancing logistics, trade, and economic competitiveness.
"This is a mega project, as it also involves a gas terminal," he explained. "Although the waters in Kuching are shallow, we have found a solution to make this project a reality."
He further emphasized that a smart port will be built in Kuching, which will stand out from other ports.
Speaking at the 2024 Institution of Malaysian Engineers (IEM) Sarawak Annual Dinner on Sunday night, he highlighted that the deep-sea port is expected to serve as a key catalyst for the growth of the industrial, export, and investment sectors. This includes the development of critical infrastructure, such as 16 bridges worth RM12 billion across the state.
Also present at the event were Sarawak Deputy Premier Professor Datuk Amar Dr. Sim Kui Hian, Sarawak Utilities and Telecommunications Minister Datuk Seri Julaihi Narawi, and IEM President Professor Engineer Jeffrey Chiang Choong Luin.
