MoU for hiring foreign workers from India will be renewed

Minister of Human Resources, Steven Sim/RTM

NEW DELHI, August 22 - The Ministry of Human Resources has renewed the memorandum of understanding (MoU) on the recruitment of foreign workers from India that lapsed 10 years ago, thus updating the recruitment procedures and preventing exploitation.

According to the minister, Steven Sim, the original MoU expired in 2014 but within 10 years, almost 160,000 foreign workers from India have entered the country without any clear recruitment procedure policy.

"This MoU will be a guideline for hiring if in 10 years, approximately 133,000 Indian workers go to Malaysia but there is no MoU, no guidelines between the two countries. So with these guidelines, hiring from India will be more transparent, fair and orderly," he told reporters after the end of the Prime Minister's three-day visit to India.

He stressed that the new MoU is not intended to bring in more foreign workers because the maximum limit has already been set.
