JAKIM calls, reprimands production of 'Bidaah' drama series

A video clip from the drama series episode 'Bidaah' that sparked controversy

KUALA LUMPUR, March 15- The Malaysian Islamic Development Department (JAKIM) has called in the production team of the drama series 'Bidaah' following a controversial video clip from an episode that caused public unrest.

JAKIM Director-General Datuk Dr. Sirajuddin Suhaimee stated that a reprimand was issued, emphasizing that all forms of artwork must align with the principles of faith, Shariah law, and morality, and must not contradict or spread misinterpretations of Islamic teachings.

"The producer has accepted the reprimand and is willing to remove any scenes deemed unsuitable for public viewing," he said in a statement today.

A meeting of JAKIM’s Islamic Media Censorship Committee also reviewed the entire content of the drama, including unreleased episodes, to assess the potential impact and implications of the show’s material.

Sirajuddin affirmed that JAKIM is always ready to provide guidance and references to ensure that any work is appropriate and consistent with Islamic principles.

"Islam does not reject art but recognizes it as a means to express the beauty granted by Allah SWT and convey messages to society," he explained.

He further emphasized that Islamic art must adhere to Shariah guidelines, promote goodness, and avoid endorsing ideas that contradict ethical values.

"JAKIM reiterates that the Guidelines for Censoring the Content of Broadcasting Materials with Islamic Elements issued in 2015 are the primary reference for all parties in the broadcasting industry," he added.
