GUA MUSANG, 2 March- The installation of solar lights in the Orang Asli settlement in Kampung Sempadik, Pos Belatim, here, has been included in the Alternative Rural Electricity Supply (BELB) Project planning and is expected to be implemented next year.
The Orang Asli Development Department (JAKOA) announced the project involves a hybrid solar system for villages that have not yet received grid electricity supply.
"The application for this project has been submitted in the First Plan (RP1) under the 13th Malaysia Plan and is expected to be implemented in 2026," it said in a statement today.
As an immediate measure, JAKOA is identifying locations that require temporary solutions through the installation of solar lights in collaboration with relevant agencies and non-governmental organizations (NGOs).
According to JAKOA, the effort aims to ensure that affected villages can enjoy basic lighting before the implementation of the main project and to reaffirm their commitment in finding the best solution for the well-being and welfare of the Orang Asli community.
"JAKOA is always committed to ensuring that the welfare and well-being of the Orang Asli community, especially those in rural areas, continues to be given attention," the statement said.
Earlier, the media reported that the Temiar Orang Asli tribe in Pos Belatim and Pos Balar hoped that the number of solar lights could be increased to improve safety and illuminate the areas at night.
Residents said they still rely on candlelight and solar lights due to the lack of electricity. In addition to more solar lights, they also hope that elephant repellent lights can be provided to reduce the threat of wild elephants at night.
