MEMBAKUT, Feb 15- Development of the halal industry nationwide is a focus for the Ministry of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives (KUSKOP) in the 13th Malaysia Plan.
To achieve this, collaboration between KUSKOP and state governments must be strengthened.
Minister Datuk Ewon Benedick expressed KUSKOP's commitment to the development of the halal industry, especially in Sabah, after launching the TEKUN Branch Office in Kimanis, Membakut, Sabah.
He explained that, based on information received, there is additional demand in Sabah within the halal industry.
"The platforms and mechanisms for the halal industry are already in place nationwide. However, I see that there is additional demand in Sabah.
"I have been informed that there are entrepreneurs applying for halal certification, and some of their products have to be sent to workshops and laboratories in Kuala Lumpur, Peninsular Malaysia, for examination and halal testing.
"Thus, there is a suggestion from them to facilitate this by establishing a halal laboratory in Sabah.
While the ministry may not be able to assist in that aspect, we can help in terms of certification grants, packaging grants, productivity grants, awareness workshops, and so on," he said.
He is optimistic that the strategic collaboration between KUSKOP, the Sabah Ministry of Development, Industry and Entrepreneurship (KPPK), and the Sabah Islamic Religious Council (MUIS) will realize this initiative.
Additionally, a joint committee between KUSKOP and KPPK Sabah has already discussed this matter.
