KUALA LUMPUR, July 25 - The government has taken three proactive approaches to prevent incidents of fallen trees in the capital from recurring.
These include tree inspection through visual assessment, visual tree assessment (VTA), and evaluation of tree structures using special equipment.
Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories), Dr Zaliha Mustafa, said that Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) is responsible for ensuring its effective implementation.
"Assessments and inspections of trees for the first level are carried out every 10 months for each round. While for the second and third levels, it is carried out in locations with a history of tree failures and has a high number of risky trees," she said in response to a question from Senator Datuk Mohd Hisamudin Yahya.
The Dewan was also informed that the e-pokok system developed by DBKL since 2019 has recorded a total of 236,551 trees.
Meanwhile, Dr Zaliha informed that the main objective of establishing the Tabung Dana Amanah Kawasan Hijau is to encourage public-private cooperation as well as increase community participation in improving the quality of the country's landscape while maintaining the green areas percentage in Kuala Lumpur as according to the Kuala Lumpur Structure Plan 2040.
"So, if it is successful, our efforts to increase green or open spaces in Kuala Lumpur based on the formula we use, which is 20 square meters per resident in line with the aspirations of the KL Structure Plan 2040, may be achieved earlier," she said in response to an additional question from Senator Datuk Mohd Hisamudin Yahya.
