ALOR SETAR, February 9– The Shahab Perdana Bus Terminal in Mergong, Kedah, which has been in operation for about 25 years, is set for a makeover. The first phase of its upgrade project, which started in October last year, is expected to be completed this April.
The two-phase project, costing RM12 million, will feature 16 bus platforms in its first phase.
Mayor of Alor Setar, Datuk Abdul Gafar Yahya, explained that the first phase includes the installation of the Central Ticketing System and the Terminal Operations System.
The second phase will focus on major infrastructure improvements, such as the renovation and redesign of bus routes, ticket counters, business spaces, food stalls, toilets, and landscaped areas.
"In the first phase, we will begin by clearing part of the bus platform, after which the current platform will be renovated into a concourse. The terminal building itself will also undergo some refurbishments.
"Upstairs, we plan to add a budget hotel, a backpacker hotel, business spaces, and we will upgrade the parking facilities. Several other amenities will also be introduced," he said.
He noted that while the terminal structure would not be demolished, it would undergo renovations, including repainting the roof and repairing any leaks. "We’ll focus on completing the first phase before moving on to the rest of the project," he added.
Abdul Gafar also assured that existing traders, including the 20 operators in the food court, would be given priority. Additionally, taxi drivers will be provided designated spaces at the terminal.
