KUALA LUMPUR, 10 February- The firm stance of Inspector General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain in tightening security measures at shopping malls and places of public interest is considered to be the right step in strengthening public safety.
Crime analyst Datuk Shahul Hamid Abdul Rahim said the move would not only prevent crime incidents, but also ensure that public areas are safer and under control.
According to him, the installation of high-quality closed-circuit television (CCTV) systems in public locations such as train stations and airports should be considered.
"The fact that the IGP gave orders to increase the security of public places is very good. However, we need to take this incident seriously, not just a trivial, passing matter. I propose that public places, especially train stations, airports and strategic locations, be provided with high quality CCTV to make sure the recording is clear," he said when contacted by RTM.
Shahul Hamid also said the security aspect is not only the responsibility of the authorities, but also requires the community's cooperation to fight against crime.
"We, as citizens, need to help what we can because national security is not only in the hands of law enforcers, but we also need to play a role to ensure that crimes like this do not happen," he said.
In addition, he recommended that the number of police officers and security guards be increased in public areas to enhance the effectiveness of surveillance and crime prevention.
Moreover, Shahul Hamid stressed that efforts to tighten security measures require a concerted commitment from all parties in order to ensure that the national security's reputation is preserved.
