Enrolment in STEM increased by 60 percent as of June 2024

KUALA LUMPUR, 12 December- The Ministry of Education (KPM) implemented a comprehensive approach to make learning Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) more attractive, in line with the Malaysian Education Development Plan 2013-2025.

Deputy Minister of Education, Wong Kah Woh said there has been almost 60 percent increase in student enrolment reported for STEM fields as of June 2024.

According to him, Labuan recorded the highest percentage at 58.67 percent, followed by Perlis (58.43 percent) and Putrajaya (53 percent).

"Emphasis is given on a new learning approach, curriculum strengthening, increased student and public awareness, development of teacher skills, as well as improvement of facilities and infrastructure for STEM teaching," he said when answering a question from Petaling Jaya’s Member of Parliament Lee Chean Chung in the Dewan Rakyat today about the direction of STEM learning.

Wong also said that RM100 million has been allocated for laboratory maintenance and the purchase of new STEM equipment.

So far, 506 science laboratories and 518 computer laboratories are undergoing maintenance and upgrading to ensure the effectiveness of the learning process.
