Beware of scammers who take advantage of festive season - Fahmi

Fahmi Fadzil/RTM

KUALA LUMPUR, January 19- Minister of Communications Fahmi Fadzil reminded the public to always be vigilant against fraud or scam activities, especially during the festive season including the Chinese New Year.

He said fraud syndicates often take advantage of the festive season to deceive victims, especially the elderly.

"At certain times scammers are very efficient at spotting trends among consumers. For example, during the Hajj season, they will target prospective pilgrims and during Chinese New Year, they will target victims who are celebrating festivals."

"My advice is to always be vigilant," said Fahmi.

He also advised the public to always check the information they receive and not to believe suspicious phone calls or messages.

Fahmi, who is also Lembah Pantai Member of Parliament, was met by reporters after presenting Chinese New Year donations at the Taman Seri Sentosa Morning Market here today.

More than 700 Chinese families in the Lembah Pantai area received donations in the form of vouchers worth RM150 which he personally presented.

"This donation in the form of a voucher can be used in several supermarkets in this area (Lembah Pantai). I hope it can lighten the burden and cheer up the atmosphere in conjunction with the Chinese New Year," he said.

Recipients of the donation, who were met by reporters, also expressed their gratitude for the gift.

"I thank YB (Yang Berhormat) for the RM150 voucher. I can buy isotonic drinks and other items for the celebration. Thank you," said Lim Ai Poi.

"I used the voucher to buy food. Thank you very much," explained Wong Chun Nan.

Another recipient, Yong Yun Hwa, said, "I would like to thank YB who gave our family Chinese New Year vouchers which will let us save money. Thank you very much, YB."
