SINTOK, April 13 – Students at Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) are encouraged to master at least four languages as an essential foundation for improving employability in the increasingly challenging global job market.
The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tan Sri Johari Abdul, stated that students should take advantage of the opportunities available during their university studies to learn various languages in preparation for the workforce.
"Strive to master Malay as the national language, English as the international language, Mandarin for business, and Arabic as an additional example.
"By mastering multiple languages, you will never lose out. All employers will seek UUM graduates. I believe the human brain has no limits, so universities should require students to learn four languages," he said.
He made these remarks while speaking at the Outreach Program "Leadership Talk: Cultivating Future Leadership" at Seminar Hall A, UUM Convention Centre.
He also urged students to make the most of their four years at university to build other skills such as communication, global networking, and strong integrity, in addition to academic achievements.
"Leadership begins with the courage to step out of your comfort zone. Master languages, expand your network, and become a relevant leader in the digital era," he said.
Johari added that exposure to the outside world, such as visits to universities both domestically and internationally, can broaden students' perspectives and should not be limited to the system alone.
"Take the opportunity to see the world. Do not rely solely on what is around you," he emphasized.
He also touched on the issue of access to education, which is now more open due to advances in information technology, allowing students in both urban and rural areas to enjoy equal educational opportunities.
"There is no excuse not to seek knowledge, as most places now have internet access. What matters is how we utilize this facility," he stated.
Additionally, he advised students interested in politics to equip themselves with a comprehensive package, including academic achievements and good personal presentation.
"You will not only be questioned by people but also by God about what you have done with power. Be a wise public representative," he said.
