Property tax rebates to be expanded to 10 local authorities

Datuk Mohd Jafni Md Shukor

JOHOR BAHRU, Nov 29- The 30% property tax rebate will be extended to 10 local authorities (PBT) in Johor as part of a tax alignment measure starting 1 January next year.

State Executive Councillor for Housing and Local Government, Datuk Mohd Jafni Md Shukor, said the local authorities include the Kota Tinggi Municipal Council, Muar Municipal Council, Tangkak Municipal Council, and Pontian Municipal Council.

The final evaluation for this initiative has been ongoing since 2013, but its implementation was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“This time, the tax increase does not use the rates for 2024 but refers to the rates for 2020. The current calculation method is based on 2020 figures.

"Under Section 137 of the Local Government Act 1976 (Act 171), local authorities are required to review tax rates every five years,” he said.

He made these remarks to reporters after officiating the Johor Media Club Annual General Meeting here.

Mohd Jafni also noted that the rebate can only be used within a one-year period.

Previously, the state government announced a 30% property tax rebate for five local authorities where tax hikes were implemented this year.

The five local authorities are Johor Bahru, Iskandar Puteri, Pasir Gudang, Kluang, and Pengerang.
