PUTRAJAYA, 28 April – Malaysia and the Maldives are committed to strengthening cooperation in various areas across various sectors, in order to foster a more prosperous and resilient future.
In a bilateral meeting in Putrajaya today, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and President of the Maldives, Dr Mohamed Muizzu discussed various issues involving bilateral relations, regional and international developments.
Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to continue fighting for peace, prosperity and sustainable development.
Both countries also agreed to strengthen cooperation in the tourism sector, including exploring opportunities in muslim-friendly and halal tourism, especially ahead of the Visit Malaysia 2026 (VM2026) campaign.
During the meeting, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar also offered Malaysia's expertise in the halal industry for the Maldives to benefit from.
In addition, Malaysia and the Maldives pledged to expand cultural and educational exchanges and enhance relations through cooperation in higher education institutions and student visa relaxation.
As a sign of commitment, Malaysia and the Maldives signed three Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) involving cooperation in the fields of tourism, health and sports, in addition to the exchange of Notes of Understanding on diplomatic training and bilateral consultations.
Meanwhile, Dr Mohamed Muizzu, also expressed his appreciation to Malaysia for the warm welcome extended during his visit. He also invited the Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, to make a return visit to the Maldives in the near future.
Both leaders also stressed the importance of continuing close cooperation in addressing climate change issues in line with the Paris Agreement, championing the rights of developing countries, and calling for a peaceful resolution to the Palestinian conflict and the humanitarian crisis in Myanmar.
