PUTRAJAYA, 26 April – More than 40 Islamic Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) from various backgrounds gathered in a Roundtable session to discuss the role of organisations in facing global challenges in the post-President Donald Trump era.
Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs), Dr. Zulkifli Hasan stressed that Islamic NGOs should not act in isolation, but rather need to act collectively and in tandem.
"We discussed the role of Islamic NGOs in facing the changes that are happening in the world due to the uncertainties that have arisen, especially after or during the era of President Donald Trump which has influenced global uncertainties.
"We have succeeded in identifying issues and trends. Finally, we agreed on several things that need to be implemented, among them is a collaboration among NGOs and a value-based approach," he said when met after the Roundtable session on the Future of Islamic NGOs in Facing the Changing World Order held here.
The conference also featured two figures from the University of Leeds, Prof. Salman Sayyid and Prof. Mustafa Sheikh from the Iqbal Center for Critical Muslim Studies.
Among the issues discussed are climate change, poverty, the energy crisis as well as threats to the Muslim community's values within the context of global geopolitical changes.
In addition, an agreement needs to be reached so that Islamic NGOs can come forward with structured cooperation, champion universal values as well as play a more proactive role in leading change towards a more just and prosperous world.
The conference is also an important platform for formulating long-term strategic actions to strengthen the role of Islamic NGOs at the national and international levels.
This move is expected to strengthen the role of Islamic NGOs as more strategic and relevant agents of global change.
