KUALA LUMPUR, April 19 – Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM) veterans are called to play an active role in combating the spread of fake news which is increasingly worrying in today's digital era.
Communications Minister, Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said the spread of unverified information not only sparks hatred, but also undermines harmony and is a major threat to national unity.
"Recently, a video went viral purporting to show police vehicles being doused with water as a sign of disrespect for the PDRM. After checking, the video was actually related to the Songkran Festival celebration in Kedah."
"Sometimes I feel called, because people these days are more likely to believe what is spread on WhatsApp than waiting for official news at 8pm. That's why I need the help of PVRTM friends to use their respective influence in the WhatsApp group," he said.
Fahmi said this when speaking at the RTM Veterans Association (PVRTM) Aidilfitri Celebration Ceremony at the Tun Abdul Razak Institute of Broadcasting and Information (IPPTAR) here, today.
The minister also called on PVRTM members to convey a simple message to the community, “If you are not sure, do not share. For news verification, refer to RTM.”
Fahmi added that the vast experience of veterans can be utilized to educate the community to be more informed and responsible.
As a sign of support for PVRTM’s efforts, his ministry also announced a special allocation commitment of RM30,000 to the association.
The ceremony, which took place at the Dewan Cendekiawan, IPPTAR, was graced by the presence of the Tengku Permaisuri of Selangor Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin as the Royal Patron of PVRTM.
Her Majesty also agreed to launch the official logo for PVRTM’s 30th anniversary and introduce the latest program PVRTM.podcast, in addition to presenting a mock sponsorship cheque to the association as a sign of continued support.
The ceremony also celebrated the 100th birthday of former national broadcasting figure, Tan Sri Ahmad Merican, in appreciation of his contributions to the world of broadcasting in the country.
