KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 10 – The Ministry of Health of Malaysia (KKM) has increased the allocation of an additional RM1 million for the Differentiated HIV Services for Key Populations (DHSKP) programme in order to finance the HIV/AIDS prevention programme, starting in 2025.
This addition made the total annual allocation for the programme increase to RM8 million.
Minister of Health Datuk Seri Dr. Dzulkefly Ahmad said that the grant will be used to expand the DHSKP programme designed to reduce new infections.
In addition, it aims to improve the quality of life of those affected through prevention, screening, and care services provided at KKM primary care facilities throughout the country.
"This initiative reflects the government's commitment to work together to deal with AIDS, as a shared responsibility between the government, civil society, and other stakeholders.
"The response to AIDS should not be one-sided," he said in a statement.
The Minister of Women, Family and Community Development Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri emphasised the importance of a holistic approach in dealing with HIV/AIDS.
"Tackling this epidemic requires an approach that not only offers medical solutions but also addresses the stigma, discrimination, and socioeconomic challenges faced by those affected.
"Issues such as women's rights, economic equality, and child welfare are closely linked to the fight against HIV/AIDS. Therefore, collective efforts that prioritise systemic change and individual well-being are much needed," she said.
She also emphasised her ministry's support for initiatives such as the MyLady Assistance Scheme, a microcredit programme for single mothers living with HIV, apart from considering reviving the HIV/AIDS Shelter programme run by the Malaysian AIDS Council.
In the meantime, the chairman of the Malaysian AIDS Foundation (MAF), Professor Datuk Dr. Adeeba Kamarulzaman stressed the importance of the corporate sector’s involvement in the national response to AIDS.
"Corporate donations are now the second largest source of funds for MAF and MAC after the Ministry of Health. This collaboration fills a critical gap, ensuring aid reaches the communities and individuals most in need," he said.
He also mentioned the economic value of the HIV/AIDS program, citing a DM Analytics study which found that every RM1 invested in HIV/AIDS initiatives can generate RM14 in productivity.
During the Red Ribbon Gala held recently, a total of RM2.8 million was successfully raised through sponsorship and table sales, with large contributions from the Sunway Group, Yayasan Petronas, KAREX, and others.
The event is part of the Sunway Group's 50th anniversary celebration and is celebrated concurrently with World AIDS Day.
The guests were also entertained by performances by famous artists such as Datuk Zainal Abidin, Dayang Nurfaizah, Datuk Francesca Peter, Amir Masdi, and Bob Yusof.
