KOTA BHARU, 8 December - The public is reminded not to make crank calls regarding the flood situation, as such actions complicate rescue teams and could disrupt vital operations.
Kelantan police chief, Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat, said this needs to be avoided, especially ahead of the second wave of the Northeast Monsoon (MTL) which is expected to hit Kelantan soon.
He revealed that 114 of the nearly 2,000 calls received recently were identified as fake calls, most of which were recorded in Pasir Mas.
"There have been cases where callers claimed they were trapped by flooding, but when rescue teams arrived at the scene, it was found that the report was untrue," he said.
Datuk Mohd Yusoff said fake calls can be detected because all calls are recorded.
Therefore, he warned that legal action would be taken against irresponsible individuals.
"We remind the public not to take advantage of or misuse the emergency call system. Rescue teams are working hard to help those who are truly in need," he said here.
Apart from the crank calls, irresponsible individuals are also using social media platforms such as TikTok and Facebook to spread false information related to the floods.
Datuk Mohd Yusoff expressed regret over the actions and called on the community to be more responsible.
He also stressed the importance of cooperation from all parties to ensure smooth rescue operations in critical situations such as flood disasters.
