KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 13– Since 2022, a total of 5,026 gambling websites have been blocked, with 224,403 gambling-related content removed from social media platforms as of February 1.

The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), in collaboration with internet service providers, successfully took down 209,006 pieces of gambling content—accounting for 93.14 percent—primarily through Facebook.

Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil stated that to foster a safer and more sustainable internet environment, MCMC has mandated that, starting January 1, 2025, all social media and internet messaging services with at least eight million registered users in Malaysia must apply for an Application Service Provision Class License under the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

This move aims to ensure that registered service providers adhere to their responsibilities under Act 588 and follow the Code of Conduct (Best Practices) set by MCMC.

Fahmi made these remarks while responding to a question from Padang Rengas Member of Parliament, Captain Azahari Hasan.
