PUTRAJAYA, 28 November- Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) is proposed to change its name back to Universiti Pertanian Malaysia in an effort to elevate the country's agro industry.
Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu said the proposal is relevant to global developments, given that agriculture is now an important issue at the international level, including at the United Nations (UN).
"I intend to do so because in the past, climate change and global warming were not taken into account. Now, agriculture has become a global issue, and is even discussed at the highest level such as the UN.
"The name Universiti Pertanian Malaysia is again appropriate in this situation," he said after attending the Malaysian Ideas Conference (MyIDEAS) program at the Putrajaya International Convention Centre (PICC) here today.
According to him, more detailed discussions will be held before the proposal is proposed in the next Cabinet meeting.
