ALOR SETAR, Nov 12- The Royal Malaysian Customs Department (JKDM) of Kedah busted a smuggling syndicate of liquor.

This took place during an inspection on a lorry trailer that was left locked and without any import documents in the PKNS industrial area of Lebuh Raja Lumu, Port Klang Selangor.

In a statement, Kedah Customs Director Nor Izah Abd Latiff informed that the confiscated property worth more than RM281,000 involves unpaid duty of more than RM611,000.

He said the inspection on November 8th was the result of information from a team of officers from the Sungai Petani Kedah Enforcement Branch, assisted by the Customs Operational Battle Force Response Assault (COBRA).

A number of liquors of various types and brands, believed to be prohibited goods, were loaded into the lorry.

Based on the team monitoring and after waiting for about one hour, no individual appeared to claim ownership of the truck or the goods.

All the confiscated liquor was brought back to the Sungai Petani Enforcement Office, Kedah for further action.

She explained that Malaysia Duty Not Paid (MDNP) status for liquor is for the Duty Free Island market under Detail 19, Customs Duty (Exemption) Order 2022, which has exempted the imposition of duty subject to certain types and conditions on the liquor.

The case is being investigated under Section 135 (1)(d) of the Customs Act 1967.
