KUALA LUMPUR, April 22 - Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim offered condolences to the family of former Singapore First Lady Noor Aishah Mohammad Salim, 91, who passed away today.
He announced through a Facebook post that the passing of Noor Aishah, who was the widow of Singapore's first President Yusof Ishak, was heartbreaking as she was a pillar of Singapore's strength during the years of forming their national identity.
"Ms. Noor Aishah was not just a companion to a national figure and leader, but an icon of loyalty and nobility who served as a role model for women in this region. Her simplicity clearly bridged relationship between leaders and the people."
"As a woman who also accompanied her husband in the political field, I can certainly understand the sacrifices made by Ms. Noor Aishah. Her ability to remain steadfast in every step of life is admirable," the post said.
The Prime Minister said he and all Malaysians also extend their condolences to the deceased's family.
"May her soul rest in peace and be placed with the righteous," the post added.
The deceased Noor Aishah died at the Singapore General Hospital at 4.28am and will be buried today at the Kranji National Cemetery, next to her husband's grave.
