Pardon: Application must be submitted by prisoner

Istana Negara

KUALA LUMPUR, 3 January - Applications for a pardon or remission of a sentence must be submitted by the prisoner concerned.

Istana Negara, in a statement, said the application by the prisoner involved will be considered by the Pardons Board at its next meeting, which is chaired by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

This is based on the provisions of Article 42(1) and (2) of the Federal Constitution for offences committed in Kuala Lumpur, Labuan and Putrajaya.

"This provision grants the Yang di-Pertuan Agong the prerogative power to grant pardons, reprieves and respites for offences committed within the Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur, Labuan, and Putrajaya," the statement said.

"His Majesty may also remit, suspend, or commute sentences imposed by the courts for such offences," Istana Negara said.

Istana Negara also reminded all parties to respect the Federal Constitution and adhere to the laws.
