JOHOR BAHRU, February 1- The Malaysian Intellectual Property Corporation (MyIPO) recorded a total of 51,591 intellectual property registrations last year, with 33,518 of these coming from overseas intellectual property owners.
MyIPO Chairman, Dr. Mohd Zuhan Mohd Zain, shared that 18,073 registrations were made by local intellectual property owners during the same period.
In terms of applications, 42,635 came from overseas owners, while 23,025 were submitted by local applicants.
The agency is committed to organizing various programs this year to raise public awareness about the importance of intellectual property registration, with the goal of further increasing the number of registrations in 2025. Special attention will be given to Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs).
"Only about 10 percent of SMEs register their intellectual property, so we’ve been going into the field, meeting with them, collaborating with state governments, and engaging with them directly," he said. "Alhamdulillah, awareness has grown, and we’ve seen a rise in registrations among SMEs."
He made these comments after completing the MyIPO di Hati Program in Johor Bahru, where 200 students received a donation of RM30,000, and the Taman Pulai Indah Mosque was also given a RM10,000 donation.
