Malaysia's SMART team mobilized for SAR in Myanmar

The Special Malaysia Disaster Assistance and Rescue Team (SMART) was mobilized o participate in the search and rescue (SAR) operation in the areas most affected by the earthquake in Myanmar

SUBANG, March 30 - The Special Malaysia Disaster Assistance and Rescue Team (SMART) was mobilized this morning to participate in the search and rescue (SAR) operation in the areas most affected by the earthquake in Myanmar.

It involved 50 rescuers including a Contingent Commander and 49 personnel.

The team will operate using two Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) A400 aircraft. The focus of the mission is on search and rescue operation.

Among the equipment brought along were Base of Operations (BoO) set, search and rescue equipment, communications, technical, medical and two Man trucks.

The operation's place and duration of SMART's operation in Myanmar will be determined by the Myanmar government.

In the meantime, two coordination meetings were by the National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA) for the aid mission with the agencies involved.

The tragedy has claimed the lives of at least 1,600 people, while 3,408 were injured as of early this morning.
