KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 1– The Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) will gradually assume full responsibility for operations at the country's 114 entry points by the end of this year.
AKPS Director-General, Datuk Seri Hazani Ghazali, stated that the agency's oversight will streamline operations by integrating all entry point controls, eliminating overlaps between various agencies involved in border security.
"All these agencies will operate under a single 'chain of command,' improving efficiency. This will simplify processes for officers, as they no longer need to coordinate with immigration, customs, and other departments separately," he explained.
While AKPS will manage entry and exit points, customs authorities will still be responsible for excise duties, taxes, and assessments. AKPS will facilitate all movements in and out of the country, ensuring smooth operations.
Hazani made these remarks during his appearance as a special guest on the Selamat Pagi Malaysia (SPM) Program at Angkasapuri Kota Media.
The first phase of this initiative, which begins today, includes 22 entry points, with the Immigration, Customs, Quarantine, and Security Complex (ICQS) in Rantau Panjang, Kelantan, serving as the pilot location.
He also suggested that the initiative could be expanded to the country’s borders, in collaboration with the Malaysian Armed Forces (ATM) and the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM).
The official AKPS Launch Ceremony will take place on February 2 at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA 1), officiated by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof.
