KUALA LUMPUR, January 5- The spread of 'human metapneumovirus' (hMPV) urges the community to pay special attention to protecting high-risk groups.

Public Health Medical Specialist from the Disease Control Division, Ministry of Health Malaysia (KKM), Dr. Aznida Mohd Zaki stated that the virus can spread through contaminated liquid droplets, similar to influenza and COVID-19.

"Generally, symptoms will last for two to five days, including fever, cough, cold, headache, shortness of breath, or wheezing.

"These symptoms are usually mild in healthy individuals. However, for high-risk groups such as children under five years old, seniors aged 60 and above, or individuals with chronic illnesses like lung, heart, or diabetes conditions, they are at risk of experiencing serious infections or complications such as bronchitis and pneumonia.

"Therefore, they should practice preventive control measures that were implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic, such as frequent handwashing with soap or using hand sanitizers.

"If experiencing symptoms like cough and cold, practice proper cough etiquette," she said here.

She also emphasized that the majority of infected patients will recover without serious complications.

However, high-risk individuals need to be more cautious and seek treatment immediately if symptoms persist.

She clarified that so far, there is no specific treatment or vaccine to prevent the virus.
