Online gambling syndicate busted, 288 illegal immigrants arrested

KAJANG, April 11- The Immigration Operation successfully arrested 288 illegal immigrants (PATI) at Hentian Kajang and dismantled premises suspected of being an online gambling centre, yesterday.

The raid, which began at 7.30pm, involved six blocks, led by the Putrajaya Immigration together with the National Registration Department (JPN) and the Malaysian Civil Defence Force (APM).

Deputy Director General (Operations) of Immigration, Jafri Embok Taha said that a total of 242 men and 46 women aged 18 to 60 were arrested, involving citizens of Indonesia, Myanmar, Pakistan, Nepal, India, Sri Lanka and Sudan.

Among the offences identified were not having valid travel documents, overstaying and violating employment pass conditions.

"We will carry out such operations continuously to ensure monitoring and reporting to ensure that understanding of legal compliance continues and that foreign nationals in our country comply with the laws", he said in a press conference here.

He said that most of the foreigners involved work at nearby food premises and factories.

All detainees were taken to Putrajaya Immigration before being sent to the Semenyih Detention Depot.
