DAVOS, Jan 22- Malaysia is exploring opportunities by upgrading several existing free trade agreements (FTAs), including the aspect of digitalisation in every agreement signed.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said this is in line with digital transformation, one of the priorities initiated by ASEAN.
“We have just signed last week with the United Arab Emirates, the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) with the United Kingdom," he said.
"And now, we want to be on the right track with the European Union through the Malaysia-EU Free Trade Agreement (MEUFTA)," he added.
"A very important component that was missing in all the previous FTAs is of course digitalisation," Anwar said.
He said this at the ‘Country Strategy Dialogue’ session, on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum (WEF) Annual Summit 2025, here.
The Prime Minister also emphasised the importance of private sectors coming together through collaborations in digitalisation to fast forward the initiative among member countries.
Meanwhile, he said the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ) is a phenomenal move between Malaysia and neighbouring Singapore.
Anwar said the collaboration was successfully realised based on mutual trust and shared policies for the benefit of both countries.
"This Johor-Singapore economic zone, in my mind, is a phenomenal sort of a move, because it must be based on trust and common policies, and it is happening," he said.
"We are really enthusiastic, it has become a very important focus for Malaysia-Singapore and also for ASEAN," Anwar said.
