Legislation governing polytechnics to be revised

Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir

IPOH, Jan 11– The government plans to revise the legislation governing polytechnics this year to align with the direction of the country’s higher education transformation.

Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir explained that key areas of focus will include the role and legal status of these institutions.

"We need to review the current act and identify necessary improvements," he said. "This may involve adding new provisions or removing outdated ones, as part of our efforts to strengthen the entire polytechnic ecosystem."

He made these comments to reporters during the project handover ceremony marking the completion of the remaining renovation work at the Ungku Omar Polytechnic Branch Campus in Bercham.

The project, which began in 2018, cost RM27.1 million and was fully completed on December 28 of last year. The campus is designed to accommodate 1,200 students and will begin admitting students in phases starting in February, with full admissions expected in August.

The campus will offer five diploma programs: Accounting, Business Studies, Finance, Islamic Finance, and Retail Management.
