'Baraan' Revives Javanese Traditions Among Youth

Baraan Ziarah Raya program for the 75th anniversary of the Intan Jubilee of Kampung Assam Jawa

KUALA SELANGOR, April 1 - The Baraan programme, also known as the festive visit, will continue as a medium to attract more youths to participate in traditional events of the Javanese community, particularly in the Kuala Selangor district, so that it is not lost to time.

The Minister of Health, who is also the Member of Parliament for Kuala Selangor, Datuk Seri Dr. Dzulkefly Ahmad, stated that this will revive the practice that has been around since the 1950s and will strengthen the bonds of brotherhood while enhancing the spirit of neighborliness.

"We want young people to be directly involved and appreciate the meaning of Baraan, not just ride motorcycles.

"In the past, this visit was only done by bicycle. We would visit and meet with the local community alongside the older generation," he said.

He made these remarks after the launch of the Baraan Ziarah Raya program for the 75th anniversary of the Intan Jubilee of Kampung Assam Jawa here.

It is estimated that around 300 houses from three villages will be visited starting from this morning until the afternoon.

Among the villages involved are Kampung Assam Jawa, Kampung Bukit Kucing, and Kampung Ijok, with the participation of more than 200 Baraan participants.

Dzulkefly also inaugurated the 'Breakfast House' owned by Suharto Bakri and Mortini Mesari, a unique house that celebrates Baraan participants with traditional breakfast dishes in conjunction with Aidilfitri.

He also presented 'duit raya' (money packets) contributions to the children present to celebrate those who attended the event.
